why japanese?

i am currently taking my 1st semester of japanese in order to prepare to live abroad in tokyo next year and conduct social research pertaining to the korean minority living in japan. hopefully this will culminate in a novel (my thesis project) that will bend the traditional immigrant narrative in that it will not be about a foreigner in a western land.
